  5.     An organizer of civil rights boycotts during his life,
  6. Martin Luther King Jr. is now inspiring a raft of them, 22
  7. years after his death. Two weeks ago, when Arizona voters
  8. rejected the creation of a paid state holiday to honor King,
  9. the National Football League said it would begin scouting
  10. out-of-state locations to replace Phoenix as the site of the
  11. 1993 Super Bowl. Last week the list of potential boycotters
  12. grew longer with the addition of a heavyweight name: the
  13. National League of Cities announced that it would reconsider
  14. holding its 1991 convention in Phoenix.

  16.     To avert damage to the state economy, Arizona Governor Rose
  17. Mofford is suggesting that the legislature consider approving
  18. a King holiday. Backers are trying to organize another
  19. referendum; opponents vow they will start recall drives against
  20. legislators who vote pro-holiday. Meanwhile former Governor
  21. Evan Mecham, the man who rescinded the King holiday three years
  22. ago, has begun a boisterous fund-raising drive to keep the
  23. state calendar King-free.
